The Invisible Chemicals in Our Everyday Lives

Most people have never heard the term PFAS, yet these chemicals are quietly present in daily routines across the country. From the pan you cook breakfast in to the water you drink before bed, PFAS have found their way into places we rarely question. Understanding what they are and why they matter is the first step toward protecting ourselves, our families, and our communities.
PFAS, short for per and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a large group of man made chemicals designed to resist heat, water, and oil. Because of these useful properties, they have been used for decades in products like nonstick cookware, stain resistant fabrics, food packaging, firefighting foam, and even cosmetics. What made them attractive to manufacturers has also made them dangerous, they do not break down easily in the environment or in the human body.
That persistence is why PFAS are often called forever chemicals. Once they enter the environment, they can travel through soil, seep into groundwater, and accumulate in rivers and lakes. Over time, they build up in wildlife and in people. Studies have shown that most Americans already have some level of PFAS in their blood, often without knowing how they were exposed.
For many families, the most concerning source of exposure is drinking water. Communities near military bases, airports, and industrial sites have been especially affected due to the historical use of firefighting foam and chemical manufacturing processes. However, PFAS contamination is not limited to these areas, it has been detected in water systems across the country, including rural and suburban communities.
Health concerns linked to PFAS exposure are serious and still being studied. Researchers have found associations with increased cholesterol levels, immune system effects, thyroid disruption, and certain cancers. Pregnant women, infants, and children may be particularly vulnerable, as PFAS can cross the placenta and be present in breast milk.
What makes this issue especially challenging is that PFAS are largely invisible. They have no taste, no smell, and no color in water. Without testing, there is no easy way to know if they are present. This uncertainty can be frustrating, but it also highlights the importance of awareness and advocacy.
Communities across the nation are beginning to take action. Local groups are pushing for stronger regulations, better water testing, and accountability from polluters. At the same time, individuals are learning small but meaningful ways to reduce their exposure, such as using certified water filters, avoiding certain nonstick products, and staying informed about local water quality reports.
This is the beginning of a larger conversation. PFAS are not just a scientific issue, they are a public health concern, an environmental challenge, and a call for collective action. By understanding the basics, we can start asking better questions, making informed choices, and supporting efforts that lead to safer, cleaner futures.
